CF Masonville Place is about to be the new home of what’s been described as “a playground for adults.”
Cineplex announced on Thursday that it plans to open one of two new Rec Room locations in 2018 in the north-end mall.
It’s expected to take up 36-thousand square feet and is part of the plaza’s multi-million dollar expansion.
“The Rec Room is an entertainment destination for adults that brings together live entertainment, multiple dining experiences, amusement gaming, and feature attractions,” said Cineplex’s Director of Communications Sarah Van Lange. “The community is really going to love it.”
The other newly announced Rec Room location is the West Edmonton Mall.
“[The London location] will have at least two, it may have three restaurants inside of it,” said Van Lange. “The location that we’ve opened in Edmonton has three dining experiences, one is called ‘Three10’ and that’s an upscale restaurant that actually has one of Canada’s largest wood-fire ovens. It also has a pizzeria, it was a poutine bar, it has a donut bar, so these are all things we’re looking to bring into the Masonville location.”
Plans for facilities in Toronto and Calgary were previously announced.
Cineplex aims to open an additional 10 to 15 Rec Rooms across the country in the coming years.
A city by-law only allows shopping malls to dedicate 10 per cent of their floor space to entertainment use, to keep the focus downtown.
The developer successfully lobbied Council last fall to approve a rezoning request, bringing Masonville to 16 per cent. Thanks to the growing popularity of online shopping and power centres like the one in Hyde Park, city staff estimate 15 per cent of malls will fail or be converted into non-retail space within the next decade.
