The Kitchener man charged in a fatal crash that killed a 29-year-old London woman last month will spend the holidays behind bars.
CTV News reports Ahmed Darwish, who has been in custody since November 27th, appeared in a Kitchener court Monday via video link, and was remanded back into custody.
His next scheduled court appearance is January 5th.
29-year-old Susana Dumitru was killed November 27th in a crash on Highway 7/8 near Trussler Road, just west of Kitchener. Her two-month old son, George, was taken to hospital in critical condition. He remains at Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto.
Darwish is facing a number of charges including impaired driving causing death, dangerous driving causing death, failure to provide a breath sample, and failure to submit to a drug test.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to raise $35,000 to repatriate Dumitru’s body to her native Romania.
“Friends remember Susana as a loving dedicated mother, wife, a creative and talented architect, who was very kind, friendly and always made those around her feel at peace and calm. She was outgoing and full of life. Susana was truly beautiful on the inside and out and her eyes were always smiling,” said Rebeka Pop in a letter on the campaign page.
Pop said Dumitru and her husband, Razvan, recently moved to Canada from Romania in the spring to start a new life. She said they were just getting settled into their new home and life as parents before the fatal crash.
As of 8:15 a.m. Tuesday, $35,727 has been raised, exceeding their goal.
