The 23-year old Chinese national charged with killing a 60-year old Thorndale woman while driving drunk is also facing a slew of immigration charges.
One week after being charged with impaired driving causing death and dangerous driving causing death, Jinghao Zhou is now facing charges of possessing a false passport, using a false passport, and providing false information to immigration officials.
“He’s facing three new criminal charges under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act charging that he possessed and used a fraudulent document and that he provided misleading or false information in order to extend his stay in Canada,” Zhou’s lawyer, Jim Dean, told AM980.
Dean said that the language barrier between he and Zhou has proved challenging.
“Every time I need to speak with him I require the assistance of a Mandarin interpreter,” he said. “It’s difficult to have a real heart to heart with your client or any lengthy detailed discussion because everything gets slowed down and interpreted…. It does pose its difficulties.”
Zhou was initially charged after he allegedly drove an SUV into a burgundy Pontiac Sunfire–which was stopped at a red light–in the early hours of Nov. 24 at the north London intersection of Richmond and Sunningdale.
Gloria Chivers, a newspaper delivery carrier, was pronounced dead on the scene.
Zhou was granted bail on Tuesday, but soon after arrested again by immigration officials, and taken into custody.
The accused is scheduled to appear in court by video Dec. 7 to answer for the impaired driving-related charges. No date has been set for an immigration hearing.
Eleven people have been killed in collisions this year in London, including Chivers. Three of the deaths this year were pedestrians. That’s up from last year when seven people were killed in crashes including four pedestrians and one cyclist.
