A 26-year-old London man has been charged in connection to an alleged sexual assault in the downtown core last week, the third alleged sexual assault investigated by police in less than seven days.
Police say they began their investigation on Tuesday, Nov. 1 after a woman reported being sexually assaulted earlier that morning.
The woman told investigators that she and a friend were in the downtown area around 3:15 a.m. when they negotiated a ride with a man in a dark coloured sedan who they believed was providing a ride service.
After arriving at their destination, police say they woman and her friend paid the fare and entered a residence. Soon after, the driver of the vehicle attended the residence and told the woman that she had left items in the back of the vehicle, police said.
“When the woman went back to the vehicle to check for the items, the driver accosted her physically and touched her in a sexual manner,” said police in a media release Monday. “The woman was able to free herself and return to the residence, and police were called. She was not injured as a result of the assault.”
Police say they arrested a male in connection to the incident on Friday.
Wopatshu Ukumu, 26, of London is facing a charge of sexual assault. Police say Ukumu was not a driver with any London cab company or ride service at the time of the alleged assault.
