A London MPP is looking to make October “Islamic Heritage Month.”
London Fanshawe NDP MPP Teresa Armstrong introduced a bill in the legislature on Monday as part of the NDP’s plan to fight Islamophobia.
“Islamic Heritage Month is an opportunity to reflect, celebrate and educate all generations about the contributions of a rich and diverse Islamic history and the important contributions Muslim people make to communities across Ontario,” Armstrong said.
She added that New Democrats have been working hard to fight racism in Ontario, including calling for an end to arbitrary, race-based police street checks and carding, and pushing the Wynne government to finally set up the Anti-Racism Directorate.
“By proclaiming the month of October as Islamic Heritage Month, the province of Ontario recognizes the important contribution Muslims in Ontario make as part of the vibrant social, economical, political and cultural fabric.”
Armstrong said her bill will bring the provincial government in line with the Federal government, and local school boards.
NDP leader Andrea Horwath is calling for unanimous passage of Bill 23, so that it can be in place for next month.
