A Halloween decoration which had been available at Home Depot is no longer being stocked after a customer complained about it.
A customer to a store in Markham saw the Scary Peeper Creeper and felt the $29 decoration made light of predatory behavior towards women.
The item is made to look like a man, with a life-sized face, peering into a window. Home Depot’s website describes the Scary Peeper Creeper as “perfect for scaring friends and family during Halloween or any other time of the year.”
The customer launched a complaint and the item was pulled from store shelves and its online site.
Paul Berto, the Director of Communications, External Affairs, and Sustainability for Home Depot Canada released the following statement:
“Thank you for reaching to us with the concerns raised by this customer. In fact, we agree that this is not in line with our core values and when we heard, we took immediate action and have removed this product from our assortment at Home Depot Canada. We reached out to advise the customer of our actions and apologize. We’re sorry for any offense that was caused.”
The item, referred to as the “Scary Peeper” on the manufacturer’s website is shown in many variations and includes a video showing how it can be used to prank and scare someone.
The manufacturer hasn’t commented on the item being pulled from store shelves at Home Depot.
