The Old East Village Grocer officially opens today.
The social enterprise of ATN Access — which helps people with disabilities and employment barriers — is not your average grocer.
Executive Director of ATN Access Vicki Mayer says the site will serve as real-world experience and training for many of their clients looking for retail experience before they find work in the private sector.
Mayer tells AM980 they started looking into this project over two years ago with a feasibility study and debated setting up shop in the downtown core.
“Discovered through that process that the Old East Village had both the greater need in terms of a grocery store and were much more welcoming and excited about the possibility of us being a part of it.”
Mayer says there will be 8 or 9 regular staff with 40 of their clients transitioning through the store every year.
The quiet-opening goes at noon today (Friday) — a celebration is expected to be planned for next month.
