Strathroy-Caradoc Mayor Joanne Vanderheyden says it’s a relief the terror incident in Strathroy is over.
Vanderheyden is one of many public officials who have publicly thank law enforcement for foiling the attempted attack by Aaron Driver.
Prime Minister Trudeau thanked the Mounties for their handling of the attempted terrorist plot that ended Wednesday night with Driver’s death.
Trudeau tweeted the work of police ensures the safety of Canadians every day.
Vanderheyden said the police did a great job.
“I’m actually glad it’s done and I’m thankful to all the professionals, they were coordinated and did exactly what they had to do to keep us safe.”
Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale said security and intelligence officials did their jobs in identifying the terrorist threat. Goodale adds Canada’s threat level hasn’t changed since the fall of 2014.
Vanderheyden was one of the few officials in Strathroy who were aware of Driver’s presence in the community, but even she had limited information.
“I had been briefed a while ago that there was a person of interest coming to our area, I did not know who, I did not know if they were male or female, I did not know where they were be living. All I knew was that person had family here, and under privacy legislation they’re allowed to come to visit their family,” said Vanderheyden. “There’s nothing I could do but again, I asked, every other week, how are things going and this shows you how professional our agencies are because as some as everything wasn’t fine they jumped on it and it’s done.”
Vanderheyden will discuss the matter with Strathroy-Caradoc Police Chief Laurie Hayman in the near future.
Lambton-Kent-Middlesex MPP Bev Shipley said we need to make sure law enforcement are fully supported.
“It does show the importance that we have to make sure that our security forces have the tools that they need to make this happen before something really disastrous happened.”
Vanderheyden says it’s now time for the community to move on and she’s confident they will.
“We need to get past this, we need to put it behind us, because this young man in no way reflect what Strathroy-Caradoc is about. This is a great place to live, work and play and we’re going to continue on.”
