Shortly after returning to politics as an independent, Nunavut MP Hunter Tootoo is admitting to a “consensual but inappropriate” relationship.
On Wednesday, Tootoo released a videotaped statement, saying he informed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of the relationship at the end of May, then quit the Liberal party and checked himself into rehab for alcohol addiction.
Deeply sorry. Voluntarily told PMO about consensual relationship. Was asked to keep it private. I resigned went to addiction treatment.

Tootoo was at the centre of rumours that he was involved with a staff member but he had only cited an alcohol problem as the reason for his departure from the Liberal caucus and cabinet at the beginning of June.
Tootoo returned to politics at the end of July and in the latest statement, he says he is “ashamed” that he let his judgment be clouded and let alcohol take over his life.
He apologizes to all involved, “especially the people of Nunavut” and says he is taking pains to protect the privacy of the woman involved.
