London is well represented in the Canadian contingent headed to Rio for next month’s Olympics.
Team Canada officials announced their track and field team Monday at a ceremony in Edmonton, introducing three Londoners within their ranks.
Decathlete Damian Warner, runner Lanni Marchant, and pole vaulter Alysha Newman are among the 65 members of the track and field team.
Warner is known to have won gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and the 2015 Pan Am Games. He also competed at the 2012 London Olympics where he finished in fifth place.
Newman is the Canadian record holder with a 4.60m jump in pole vaulting. She also won a bronze medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Meantime, Marchant is the first Canadian woman to finish a 10,000 metre run in a time of 33.25.9. She will be competing in both the women’s marathon and the 10,000 metres at next month’s summer games.
In total, the Canadian contingent will be made up of approximately 315 athletes.
The 2016 Olympic Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil will begin August 5th and run until August 21st.
The track and field events begin on August 12th.
