The London Police Major Crime Section is investigating after a deceased baby was located in a garbage dumpster in the downtown core.
Police received information at approximately 11:35 a.m. that a baby was located in a dumpster in the area of Richmond St. and Mill St.
It has now been determined that the baby was a newborn. The baby’s gender has not been released.
“They called indicating they believed they had found what they believed to be a deceased baby in a dumpster behind the building here on Richmond St.,” said Staff Sgt. Blair Harvey. “Our officers attended along with EMS and fire. Upon arrival they did confirm that they found what they believed to be a deceased infant in a dumpster.”
Mill St. was cordoned off from St. George St. to just west of Richmond for the investigation.

Residents of the apartment building at 675 Richmond St. were denied entry by police.
Meanwhile, area store owners say they hadn’t seen anything unusual and that it isn’t necessarily a high crime area.
“The circumstances here are obviously quite unusual and you wouldn’t expect something like this to happen anywhere in our community,” said Harvey. “Certainly this in an area that has a lot of pedestrian traffic, a lot of vehicle traffic, which presents some challenges in terms of securing the crime scene. But certainly, an event like this is unexpected anywhere.”
Cst. Sandasha Bough says that the body has since been removed and the scene is now cleared.
An autopsy will take place on Friday to determine cause of death.
