The Canadian Autoworkers Union says Ford Canada is laying off 489 employees at its engine plant in Windsor as part of a plan announced earlier this year to cut one shift at the facility.
Marc Renaud, vice-president of CAW Local 200 representing autoworkers in Windsor said Ford is closing down one shift at the Windsor Engine Annex starting Nov. 1.
Workers were advised in January that the shift would be eliminated but on Wednesday were told exactly how many people would be out of work and when the layoffs would begin.
The company is holding town hall meetings over the next two days to inform the employees.
About 150 workers will be offered jobs at the company's plant in Essex where it is also recalling some staff.
The news comes a day after GM closed its transmission plant in Windsor, ending a 90 year history.
