Fontana May Declare LTC an Essential Service

Joe Fontana says he could declare the LTC an essential service when he becomes mayor.

The man seen by many as the only candidate with a legitimate shot to beat Anne Marie DeCicco-Best in the race for Mayor, says the 28 day transit strike in November and December of last year wasn't necessary.

"I'd obviously like to consult with the LTC, with council and with drivers, and with the broader public," said Fontana when asked about making transit an essential service at a Thursday morning news conference. "I think it is that crucial."

However, the head of the union for LTC works disagrees, and says making transit an essential service isn't necessary.

"We've never had to do that in 30 years, and this time we did (strike)," said Pat Hunniford, the President of ATU Local 741. "To say we're going to make you an essential service, it may not be beneficial to one side or the other in that situation."

Police officers and fire fighters do not have the right to strike, and have all their contracts settled by arbitrators.

Fontana says he will be riding the bus at least once a week throughout his campaign.

“There’s no question we should all use public transportation when we can”, he said, “and in looking at my campaign and business appointments it was apparent that there were days when I could ride the bus and keep to my schedule. One leads best by example, and you know there’s a bus stop right at the front door of City Hall, how handy!”

After his statement, he got on a bus at Richmond and Talbot, and took it to Cherryhill Mall.
