Swann paints Kowalski as partisan
6:05pm
Alberta Liberal Leader David Swann says speaker Ken Kowalski needs to either shape up or step down.    Swann says Kowalski is supposed to be independent in the job he is doing but he has clearly been partisan. He says if Kowalski is not prepared to rethink some of his rigidity around certain issues he shouldn't hold the position.    The Wildrose Alliance has complained that it has been targeted by the Speaker in some of his rulings, including one that prevents it from quoting unelected leader Danielle Smith in official legislature communications.    Premier Ed Stelmach rejected the criticisms. He says members of his caucus have had their fingers rapped as well and everyone has to follow the same rules. (The Canadian Press, ccg)

Only minor contamination found on CCA land
5:50pm
Some good news for the city when it comes to redevelopment of the City Center Airport land.An independent environmental study done by A-E Com found limited contamination of the land, east of the remaining runway.  Of 25 samples tested, only three needed follow-up to determine the extent of the contamination.Phil Sand is the Executive Directive for the redevelopment of the CCA. He says this is good news for the city."It significantly helps the city in terms of minimizing costs associated with any contamination clean-up. It makes it so it is a comfortable project to move forward with from a re-development perspective in terms of human health and plant life on a go-forward basis."Sande says the next step in redevelopment is to wait for the results of the Envision Edmonton petition, which will be presented to council next Wednesday. WAP urges changes to give students more say in education
5:20pm
The Wildrose Alliance Party says the best way to fund education is to have the tax dollars follow the student.    Party leader Danielle Smith says encouraging choice and competition is the best way to deliver education.   The party, in releasing its education platform, also says it will work to make sure students struggling in certain areas get the attention they need to learn at their own pace. The party also took a run at the governing Progressive Conservatives.    Party education critic Rob Anderson says the Tories built schools in Calgary not where they were needed but in places that would win them favour with voters in tightly-contested ridings. Singleton says it was his decision to cut Gariepy off, and then to restore his services."It was intended to be short term the whole time," said Singleton, Thursday afternoon. "I never shared that with Councillor Gariepy. Our communication was too short for that to have been finalized."Singleton said he had not spoken to Gariepy, as of about 2 p.m. Thursday. When asked if media coverage of this swayed his decision to re-instate the service, Singleton quickly replied, "not one iota."Singleton insists this was not done to take away Gariepy's democratic rights to speak out. He said it was because he became confrontational with a member of administrative staff.Gariepy has expressed concern about development of the new health centre. It's now expected to be phased in starting with an emergency room and pharmacy instead of ...
