Living Hell

The tradition surrounding a death row inmate’s ‘last meal’ is something I’ve always found rather confusing. The individual is someone judged by a jury of his or her peers as having committed the most heinous of crimes, so heinous that society has sentenced the individual to death.

These are child rapists, and serial murderers. They are those who prey on the weak and defenseless.

Despite all of this, in the moments leading up to their pre-determined expiration, they’re offered a meal of their choice. Ted Bundy received a medium-rare steak, eggs done over-easy, hash browns, toast, milk, coffee, juice, butter, and jelly. John Wayne Gacy chose a dozen deep-fried shrimp, a bucket of original recipe chicken from KFC, french fries, and a pound of strawberries. Timothy McVeigh drank two pints of milk before enjoying a bowl of chocolate chip ice cream.

Honour Killings a Canadian Issue

The verdicts rendered at the Shafia murder trial should come as both a great relief and a great victory for the Canadian justice system.

The aftermath, however, is an opportunity wasted.

It would be incorrect to chalk this up to a sense of entitlement, as doing so would imply there's at least a degree of sense involved.

There is none.

Cliff Nordal's exorbitant contract with the LHSC and St.Joseph's hospital makes no sense.

Neither do the excuses lamely offered up by hospital board members, responsible for this waste, in feeble attempts to justify their actions.

In addition to his $732,615 annual salary, we've since found out Nordal cashed-in on a $1.17-million dollar bonus - not for accomplishing anything in particular, instead he was paid this money for simply not quitting.

That's it.

The board calls it a 'retention bonus', suggesting that without it - Nordal may have looked to greener pastures and left his post as London's hospital czar mid-way through a crucial reorganization process involving the LHSC and St.Joe's. They never seemed to question, however, where Nordal might've gone. His ...
