Father's Day is on the way!

Posted 5/27/2010 9:42:00 AM
Father's Day is just around the corner, but before it gets here, I wanted to take some time to rant about how much I LOVE this non-holiday.

So many people are quick to criticize Father's Day, Mother's Day, and of course Valentine's Day, because:

1) they're not actually holidays, since we don't get any days off, and...

2) it's just a day for restaurants, the greeting card industry, etc. to cash in.

Yes, it's true most of us scramble to scrunge up enough money to buy our sweeties a present. Rather than give them something homemade, we make a beeline for the nearest shopping mall and buy them something.

The typical criticism I hear: "Why does it have to be one day? EVERYDAY should be Valentine's Day if you're with someone special, and EVERYDAY you should express how much you appreciate your Mother and/or Father! Why do I need a ...

Joannie Rochette for Prime Minister?

Posted 4/6/2010 10:50:00 AM
I'm not a huge sports fan (although I am a sucker for punishment since I'm a Toronto Maple Leafs fan), and outside of work, I didn't watch much of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.

But I am absolutely thrilled to see Joannie Rochette is on Time magazine's preliminary list of the 100 most influential people of 2010.

Time says the 24-year-old Rochette ``galvanized audiences everywhere with her courage, grace and steel,'' during the Games.

I just love that she made a list of the top *influencial* people of the 2010. That word *influencial* is key. It's not just about respecting the choice she made to continue skating, and reach the goal that she had been working towards with her mother for years. I can't imagine the strength she ...

Our ailing health care system

Posted 3/26/2010 10:38:00 AM
I was relieved to see that there was at least a slight increase in the base funding for health care in Ontario in yesterday's budget.

Many hospitals were bracing themselves for a 0% increase, after balancing their budgets by forcing job cuts and cutting some services. That seems to be especially true in rural areas.

The 1.5% funding increase is more than some had estimated, but the bad news is that hospital costs in London are soon expected to rise by more than 4%.

As heard this morning on AM980, there's been speculation any funding shortfall could lead to layoffs at the regional cancer care centre. We won't know for weeks if the 1.5% will be enough.

I know that health care is one of the biggest parts of the Ontario budget, and the cost of health care seems to swell every year.

Two decades ago, 32 cents of every ...
