Ripped Off

Posted 11/16/2011 9:41:00 AM

They say any publicity is good publicity. "They" apparently, have never named a baseball team after a serial killer.

On Tuesday night, London's new professional baseball team showed off its new name and new logo. "The Rippers" is not a great name, but it didn't become offensive until we saw the logo (a man shrouded in dark clothing holding a baseball bat) and their mascot named "Jack".

"Jack the Ripper," was the name given to a serial killer in the late 1800's in London, England who targeted women. If not for the 100 year time difference, this would be on the same level of naming a team after Paul Bernardo, Robert Pickton or Russell Williams.

As soon as the name was announced, the internet was buzzing with outrage. Tweeters from London were quick to respond to AM980's post about the name with confusion, anger and calls for ...

TMZ Sinks to a New Low

Posted 8/27/2011 12:00:00 AM

This week, we saw Jack Layton pass away with class and dignity in the privacy of his own home, without prying eyes looking on.

Unfortunately, TMZ isn't allowing the same for former Apple CEO Steve Jobs.

If I were a relative or friend of Mr. Jobs who hadn't seen him in his current condition and then I saw the pictures posted ...

Burke Doesn't Miss Much

I watched most of TSN's "Free Agent Frenzy" coverage today (I'm not proud of myself, let's move on) and was quite angry when I heard Toronto Sun "reporter" and constant complainer Steve Simmons launch into a rant about Leafs GM Brian Burke heading to Afghanistan to meet with troops on Canada Day.

It's a nice thing for Burke to do, no matter how you view the conflict there.

However, for Burke to be slammed for his decision to go is stunning. Simmons is just another writer (see Strachen, Al) who's been taken to school by Burke in a public forum and now has an axe to grind for it.

For the record, there are very few free agents who did sign today I would have hoped the Leafs got in on the bidding for, based on what they actually did sign for (too much money, too much term).

 Burke has ...
