Londoners now have a new way to contact police for non-emergency situations.
London Police on Monday unveiled “LPS Chat,” a new interactive chat system on the service’s website that allows residents to communicate live with an officer about various non-emergency issues.
Police say the chat system, which is active as of Monday and will be staffed daily from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., also allows members of the community who are unable to contact police by telephone, like those who are Deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired, the ability to easily obtain assistance from the service.
“The London Police also utilizes a text-to-911 service for individuals who are Deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired, in the event that they require emergency assistance,” said police in a media release. “LPS Chat is not intended to replace this service, and citizens with communication disabilities should continue to use the text-to-911 service when emergencies arise.”
The new chat system has garnered support and recognition from the Canadian Hearing Society, police said.
“Before this new chat feature became available, people who are Deaf or hard of hearing had limited options to contact police to report a crime, such as asking someone else to call for them, or using a TTY relay service,” said Gary Malkowski, Vice-President, Stakeholder, and Employer Relations at the Canadian Hearing Society, in a statement.
“With this new instant messaging chat feature offered by London Police Services’ ‘LPS Chat’, they can now communicate with police officers via instant messaging in real-time for non-emergency situations, making communication with police officers easier for everyone.”
The following are some of the non-emergency situations that London Police say members of the public can contact police about through LPS Chat:
- Any crime where you do not have suspect information
- Minor motor vehicle collision
- Traffic complaints
- Child custody issues with no immediate safety concerns
- Lost property
- Noise complaints
- Theft from motor vehicles
- Trouble with a person
