Traffic is flowing once again through a section of the 401 just west of Sweaburg Road Thursday morning after a series of collisions involving over half a dozen vehicles.
Charge are pending after a tractor trailer crash late Wednesday night in the westbound lanes caused several collisions in the eastbound lanes.
“OPP in Oxford County responded to a two vehicle collision that occurred shortly after 10:30p.m.,” said Constable Stacey Culbert. “Through investigation, we determined a tractor trailer lost control in the westbound lanes just west of Sweaburg Road.”
The tractor trailer hit another vehicle before colliding with the centre median.
“We had lots of debris from the centre median barrier that then ended up in the eastbound lanes so we had a huge debris field in the eastbound lanes as well,” said Culbert. “As Police were responding to the scene of the initial collision, six more vehicles in the eastbound lanes collided with debris on the roadway, so at that time the OPP decided to shut down the highway for safety reasons and to assist with the clean-up.”
Crews had to remove the debris and damaged vehicles from the roadway, as well as several hundred litres of fuel that spilled following the first collision.
All lanes of the 401 between Sweaburg Road and Foldens Line were closed to traffic overnight. All lanes were reopened shortly before 5:30a.m. Thursday morning, except for the centre lane on the westbound side which remains closed.
“We got away very lucky in this incident, especially for the drivers involved,” said Culbert. “No serious injuries were reported. We did have three different drivers, two involved in the westbound crash and one in the eastbound crashes, were taken to area hospitals but as we’re reporting right now, nothing serious.”
If anyone has any information regarding this collision and has not yet spoken to police, they are asked to call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
The collision remains under investigation, and Culbert notes charges are pending against the driver of the tractor trailer.
Meantime, Middlesex County OPP are investigating a separate crash on the 401 off ramp at Wellington Road that happened earlier Wednesday.
According to Police, a vehicle went into a ditch off the east bound ramp at around 12:20p.m. Wednesday afternoon.
A man and woman were taken to hospital where the woman was pronounced dead and the man remains listed in critical condition.
Their names and ages have not been released, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
