The city’s latest homicide victim has been identified as 26-year-old Emmanuel Awai of London.
Police were called out to an apartment building at 135 Connaught Avenue at around 10:20 p.m. Wednesday night in response to a 911 call reporting an unresponsive man there.
Officers arrived on scene and located a man with an apparent gunshot wound. Police say Awai was pronounced dead at the scene and an autopsy was scheduled for Thursday.
The London Police Major Crime Section is continuing to investigate.
“We have all of our available resources conducting the investigation,” said Cst. Ken Steeves. “We don’t have a suspect at this point and we don’t have anyone in custody.”
Neighbours describe hearing two bangs that sounded like a baseball bat hitting metal followed by running down the stairs.
Bob, who lives in the building, told AM980 he didn’t pay too much attention to it at first.
“Usually we don’t pay attention to that because the building is full of kids and they always go pound on doors and take off and because we didn’t hear anyone asking for help we thought it was just kids, until we saw police and the ambulance were here.”
He added that in the past fights have broken out in the halls but a shooting is very unusual.
“I kind of knew something was bad because usually you don’t have a forensic identification unit here unless someone has died.”
Police are urging anyone with information in relation to the incident to contact them at (519) 661-5670 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Information can also be sent in online to www.londoncrimestoppers.com
