The clock is ticking for students to get their immunization paperwork in order with the Middlesex London Health Unit.
The health unit has issued notices of suspension if students don’t get updated vaccination records by Thursday night.
“What some parents don’t quite understand is that the health unit doesn’t receive reports of immunizations done outside of the health unit,” said Public Health Nurse Jill Sierra.
“If you’re into our clinic and had an immunization, we would have record of that. But, if you went to emerg, you went to a walk-in clinic, or your family doctor to have an immunization, they don’t report that information to the health unit. So, it’s up to the parents to let the Health Unit know where and when they had their immunization.”
Records can be delivered by one of the following methods:
- Mail or drop off the record to 50 King St, London Ontario, N6A 5L7
- Fax the record to 519-663-0416
- Scan and email a copy of your record to email@example.com
- Call 519-663-5317 ext.2330
In cases where kids are not getting vaccinated, Sierra says they still need to have an exemption form filled out, and in the case of a vaccine-preventable disease at the school they would be excluded.
For day care students, the health unit and the day care both need to keep the information on file.
Parents are being asked not to bring immunization information to the school, as they are not required to keep the information on file. The health unit is the only place where immunization records are kept.
If you are unable to get your records, call the MLHU to discuss your options, 519-663-5317 ext.2330.
As soon as the health unit receives the requested immunization information, the child will no longer be suspended. Schools cooperate with the health unit with this process, and must suspend your student if the health unit does not receive the information, in order to follow the law.
Students that could be suspended this Friday would have already received letters and phone calls from the health unit.
