Woodstock Police, along with the Ontario Fire Marshall’s Office, are investigating a fatal fire at a 3-storey apartment building.
At around 10 p.m. Tuesday, emergency crews responded to reports of smoke filling the hallways and smoke alarms activated at the 24-unit building at 361 Devonshire Avenue.
Officials say smoke was overpowering, but residents were quickly evacuated and sheltered in a Woodstock transit bus.
During the evacuation, fire crews found a deceased person within one of the units.
After several hours, most residents could return to their units but numerous apartments were affected by smoke.
The investigation is ongoing and no information about the victim has been released at this time.
