A two-month old boy critically injured in an alleged drunk driving crash Sunday night near Kitchener remains in hospital in critical condition.
OPP say a 29-year-old London woman, Susana Dumitru, was killed when the vehicle they were riding in was rear-ended on Highway 7/8 in Wilmot Township Sunday night.
Dumitru was pronounced dead in hospital while her baby — named George — was airlifted to hospital in Toronto with life-threatening injuries, where he remains.
The victim’s family told CTV News Toronto the boy had surgery to relieve pressure on his brain caused by severe head injuries and he has yet to regain consciousness.
The boy’s father and grandmother were also in the vehicle at the time of the crash, they both suffered minor injuries.
26-year-old Kitchener native Ahmed Darwish made a brief court appearance on Monday. He’s being held in custody and is due to make another court appearance next Monday.
Darwish faces several charges including dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death, two counts of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing bodily harm, impaired driving causing death, impaired driving causing bodily harm, fail to provide a breath sample causing bodily harm and fail to submit to a drug evaluation.
There’s no word on funeral arrangements for Susana Dumitru at this time.
