A Western student has been recognized for her bravery after she pulled an elderly woman from a burning car.
Melanie Russell was given a Citizen Citation on Thursday at the London Police Services Board for her heroic actions earlier this year.
According to Police, Russell was walking on Riverside Drive near Museum London back in June when she witnessed a collision between two vehicles.
One of the vehicles immediately caught fire.
Russell pulled the woman from the vehicle before it was engulfed in flames.
“I didn’t really have time to process what was going on, I just acted instinctively, but after the fact I was a little shaken up, and I called my Dad and when I was recounting what had happened then I started feeling a little nervous after that,” she said.
Russell doesn’t consider herself to be a hero.
“It feels nice to be recognized but I don’t feel as if I did that much, I think that I did what any reasonable person in my situation would and should do,” she said.
Russell is currently working on her Master’s at Western.
Her parents and boyfriend were in attendance for the ceremony.
