Police in Elgin County are looking for information after a World War I machine gun was stolen from a vehicle in Southwold Township Wednesday evening.
A media advisory by the Elgin County OPP detachment assures residents that the gun is inoperable, used for re-enactments rather than shooting.
The gun is a Chauchat, which was a standard issue weapon for French soldiers during the First World War, and also used by other European countries.
The vehicle was on Talbot Line in Southwold, when an unknown suspect stole the gun sometime after 8:00 pm on Tuesday.
“The Elgin County OPP is reminding the public that the need to remove visible property in your vehicle should be a priority when stopping would-be thieves,” police said.
Anyone with information regarding this theft is asked to contact Elgin County OPP at 1-519-631-2920. Should you wish to remain anonymous, you may call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), where you may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $2000.
