Presidential rivals Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton took some verbal jabs at eachother Thursday night during the annual Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner in Manhattan.
It’s tradition for the candidates to roast each other at the bipartisan charity dinner, but the event became tense at times as some jokes were more pointed than playful.
The two sat with Cardinal Timothy Dolan in between them, and they did not shake hands after being introduced.
The speeches began with the namesake’s descendant, Al Smith IV.
Trump got some early laughs, but some members of the crowd began to boo after his jokes began to sound more like deeply personal insults at his rival Hillary Clinton.
His most well received joke involved poking fun at a speech his wife Melania gave earlier in the campaign.
Clinton focused more on self-deprecating humour. She joked she took a break from her “usual nap schedule” to attend.
Some jokes were made at the expense of Former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, who did not appear amused.
