With Halloween less than two weeks away, one of the city’s most popular costume shops is facing criticism for selling outfits described as appropriating Indigenous culture.
A Change.org petition has been launched asking that McCulloch’s Costume and Party Supplies on Dundas pull headdresses or war bonnets and other accessories from its shelves.
The online document, which had the support of 89 respondants at the time of writing, says the items make for racist costumes and promote stereotyping of Indigenous cultures.
The store’s website lists a number of items for sale related to Indigenous culture including headdresses and toy bow and arrows, tomahawks and even a peace pipe.
McCulloch’s has yet to respond publicly to the petition.
