Starting Sunday, police will be able to hand out fines, or take away drivers’ licenses if you’re caught driving while under the influence of drugs.
A $180 fine awaits drivers impaired by drug use, and the same penalties drunk drivers face regarding losing their licenses will be enforced.
The first occurrence will be a three day suspension, seven days for the second, and 30 days for subsequent fines after failing roadside tests.
Drivers could have their licenses taken away for 90 days and have their vehicle impounded after being tested at a police station.
Mandatory education and treatment programs are also possible.
Drivers may also face criminal charges for impaired driving, but these new changes are being implemented now to give police the ability to get impaired drivers off the roads.
