Huron County OPP have charged a 17-year-old Clinton male with impaired driving following a single motor vehicle collision northwest of Kippen that left a 16-year-old male passenger in critical condition.
Police reported that officers responded to a vehicle rollover that took place on Staffa Road between Airport Line and Gulley Line around 2:00 a.m. on Saturday.
Investigators determined that the driver of a 4-door sedan was travelling westbound on Staffa Road when he lost control of his vehicle. The vehicle left the roadway on the south side of the road.
According to officials, the sedan rolled and tumbled several times before it came to rest overturned in a grassy field off the roadway.
Police reported that the lone 16-year-old male passenger from Huron East was ejected from the vehicle. He remains in hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The 17-year-old driver sustained minor injuries from the crash. He has been released from the hospital with minor injuries.
As a result of the investigation, police determined the driver had been drinking alcohol and his ability to drive was impaired.
As a result of the investigation he is facing the following charges:
- Causing Bodily Harm by Criminal Negligence
- Impaired Driving Causing Bodily Harm
- Young Driver – Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) Above Zero
The driver has been released from custody on a recognizance.
He has a court date scheduled for the Ontario Youth Justice Court in Goderich on October 13, 2016.
Members from the OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigation Team are continuing to investigate the crash.
