Almost a month after announcing Golden Globe winning British actor Idris Elba would headline this year’s Leaders in Innovation Dinner, officials at Western have announced a change of plans.
Due to an unforeseen scheduling conflict, Elba is no longer able to attend.
In his place, Western University has announced on Wednesday that Alan Alda will be this year’s featured guest.
The actor, writer, science advocate, and director will join scientists, researchers, and community members for the dinner on November 10th at the London Convention Centre. This year’s dinner celebrates research excellence in the field of chronic lung disease.
Alda is best known for portraying Hawkeye Pierce on M*A*S*H and most recently was seen on television on 30 Rock, The West Wing, and ER and on the big screen in The Aviator.
“We are thrilled to welcome Alan Alda to London,” said Marlys Koschinsky, Executive and Scientific Director at Robarts.
“His involvement in this year’s Leaders in Innovation Dinner will bring a new perspective on communicating with the public about the value of science and the groundbreaking work we are doing here.”
Alda will share a keynote presentation and take part in an armchair discussion about his life, career, and passion for communicating science at the dinner after touring Robarts earlier in the day.
The dinner also includes the presentation of the 2016 J. Allyn Taylor International Prize to renowned asthma researchers Dr. Stephen Holgate from the University of Southampton in the UK and Dr. Malcolm Sears from McMaster University’s Department of Medicine.
Tickets are $250 per person or $2,000 for a table of eight. Tickets can be purchased here.
