Markham’s Andre De Grasse has qualified for the semifinals of the men’s 100 metres at the Rio Olympics.
The Canadian sprinter had a slow start, but made it up in the final 50 metres to finish first in his heat.
De Grasse finished with a time of 10.04 seconds. The Markham native will be the lone Canadian in the semifinals.
Toronto’s Aaron Brown and Calgary’s Akeem Haynes failed to advance with their times both over 10.20 seconds.
De Grasse was awarded a bronze medal at the world championships last year.
Defending champion Usain Bolt of Jamaica won his heat with a time of 10.07 seconds.
The semifinals and final are both set for Sunday night.
