Elgin OPP say one person has died and four others have been taken to hospital, one in critical condition, following a serious collision just outside St. Thomas.
Details remain limited, but emergency crews including Elgin OPP, St. Thomas EMS, and Central Elgin Fire were called to the scene near Highbury Ave. and Ferguson Li. around 11:40 a.m. Friday.
The collision occurred just south of the intersection, and involved three vehicles, police said.
Paramedics transported four people from the scene to hospital, one in critical condition and three with non-life threatening injuries. A fifth person involved in the collision was pronounced deceased at the scene by the coroner, police said.
No further information has been released. Witnesses reported seeing an air ambulance at the scene.
Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the collision, and the OPP’s Technical Traffic Collision Investigators were at the scene investigating for several hours.
Ferguson Li. was closed for investigation from Dalewood Rd. to Yarmouth Centre Rd., while Highbury Ave. was closed from Truman Li. to Ron McNeil Li.
Police say both roadways reopened to traffic just after 5:30 p.m.
