Occupants of a north London home are thanking their dog after fire broke out inside their garage early Thursday morning.
Emergency crews were called to 1563 Ryersie Road in the area of Wonderland Road and Fanshawe Park Road around 2:15 a.m.
“There was a two-car garage that was fully involved with fire upon London Fire Department’s arrival,” said Platoon Chief Kirk Loveland.
“The fire appears to have started in the garage area and extended to two cars parked on the driveway.”
Loveland says the occupants of the home were awakened by their dog that something was wrong. When they opened the door to the garage, smoke filled the home and smoke detectors alarmed. The occupants were able to escape without injury.
While smoke filled the inside of the house, firefighters were able to cut the fire off before it destroyed the home’s structure.
Damage is estimated to be up to $200,000.
While the cause remains under investigation, oily rags used to stain a deck that were left in the garage may have been a factor.
The London Fire Department is reminding homeowners to never discard oily rags in the garbage, or near combustibles as they can heat up and spontaneously combust. Discard rags in a metal container with a lid to prevent fire.
