Pokémon trainers will be trying to catch ’em all in Victoria Park on Thursday.
While the park is already a hot spot for those playing the popular augmented reality cellphone app, London-based Gamerlink is organizing a Pokémon Go gym battle and costume contest.
Gamers will fill the park from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. as the game’s three teams vie for control of the park’s Pokémon Gym.
Tim Nicodemo, marketing and community manager of Gamerlink, expects at least 400 people to take part.
“Ourselves at Gamerlink, we will be stationed for the most part around the band shell area,” Nicodemo tells AM980.
“We feel that this is a good spot where people will be able to come get their bracelets when they come on time, this is where we’ll probably want to have our little contests. The actual battle itself will be centred around the South African War Memorial downtown in the park.”
Gamerlink will be offering prizes throughout the evening. Every half hour they plan to give out a Pokémon lanyard to whoever is in control of the gym at that time. As part of the costume contest for best dressed trainer and Pokémon, they’ll be awarding Pokémon socks with a Poké Ball design and a belt with a Poké Ball as the clip and images of Pokémon around the side. Whoever is in control of the gym at the end of the night will go home with a big plush Pikachu.
