OPP said a group of motorcycles were travelling eastbound on the 401 express lanes, when the collision happened.
“We have a group of motorcycles that were travelling down the highway together,” said Sgt. Colin Style with OPP.
“We are still in the process of gathering information to try and determine the sequence of events that caused the collision, in regards to the motorcycles coming in contact with the transport truck, while they were travelling down the eastbound express lanes.”
Style added that members of the collision reconstruction unit are on scene gathering evidence to assist in determining the cause of the accident.
A 27 year-old man from the GTA was pronounced dead on scene and a woman was treated for minor injuries.
Police said they are trying to locate the third rider with injuries, who left the scene just before officers arrived.
According to police, the driver of the tractor trailer was not injured in the collision and is cooperating with the investigation.
“A few members that were riding with that group that evening did return -they circled back around- to the incident location and assisted police in any way they could,” Style said.
They are appealing to any witnesses to come forward with any information to contact the Toronto OPP detachment.
“Any motor vehicle collision involving the loss of life on a highway is an extremely horrible situation for anyone to deal with,” Style added.
“We are just asking that all members of the motoring public to adhere to the rules of the road…Everybody has got to make sure they are looking for lane changes and making sure it’s safe to do so.”
