Canada’s Polka King is $1 million dollars richer after winning the Dream Lottery’s Ultimate Grand Prize.
The Grammy winner, Walter Ostanek, was presented his cheque in the Western Counties Wing auditorium at Parkwood hospital in London on Friday morning. Ostanek joked that this follows nearly seventy years of playing the lottery.
“I started buying lottery tickets at the age of 14,” he said. “I have been buying tickets–consistently–from that time on.”
With three Grammys to his name, the musician brought his accordion along and played a short set for the veterans after the cheque presentation.
“They’re kind of my audience,” Ostanek said. “I enjoy anything to do with music. That’s the way I’ve been all my life.”
He said that his life will not be changing dramatically with his new winnings. He is currently taking care of his wife, who has dementia.
“It’s bad that’s she is not here with me. But did a lot of things together. She was a big support of mine,” Ostanek said. “We were married for 59 years, so we did something right.”
Ostanek said it was “pleasure” to come out and perform to “make people happy for a little bit.”
