One of the businesses impacted by the fire that tore through a Hyde Park strip mall is looking to the future.
D&S Pianos is among the many businesses destroyed by the flames that were discovered at the back of a building on Hyde Park Road last week.
Darryl Fabiani, co-owner of the piano store, says he and his business partner have spent the last few days trying to assess the damage.
“We dug through the ashes,” says Fabiani. “We were looking for the specialty tools that are very hard to replace that we have had for up to 40 years. We did salvage some but everything else, there’s nothing there.”
Fabiani says all their instruments were lost, including the 30 to 40 pianos they usually have on site waiting to be tuned or repaired.
A rare hand-crafted piano worth $150,000 was also destroyed during the massive fire.
While the entire store is gone, Fabiani says they plan to rebuild as soon as possible.
“There’s 15 people that work at D&S so it’s important for us to keep going because it disrupts their lives as well,” says Fabiani. “We need to keep working.”
The Hyde Park plaza is home to as many as 14 businesses including Porcino restaurant, a Benjamin Moore paint store, and Elation Spa.
Police have confirmed that the fire originated at the back of the restaurant, but the cause and damage estimate have yet to be released.
In the meantime, business owners have been offered crisis counselling to deal with their losses.
