Don Cherry will be back on ‘Hockey Night in Canada’ next season.
Cherry, 82, has agreed to a new multi-year contract with Rogers. His current two-year deal with Rogers expires at the end of the playoffs.
Cherry has been a mainstay on the iconic broadcast, co-hosting Coach’s Corner with Ron MacLean since 1987.
Cherry first started working on HNIC in 1981 when he was hired by CBC. After a short stint as a colour commentator, Cherry moved to the intermission break.
MacLean, who is in the middle of a four year contract, will stay on as co-host of the popular segment.
Scott Moore, president of Sportsnet and NHL properties, told the Canadian Press there could be some ‘tweaks’ to next year’s presentation of Hockey Night in Canada, but didn’t go into specifics.
Ratings have taken a hit this spring with no Canadian teams in the playoffs for the first time since 1970.
