The London Knights just keep on rolling.
Opening up the 2016 Mastercard Memorial Cup, the London Knights recorded a 6-2 win over the host Red Deer Rebels.
It’s the Knights’ 14th win in a row.
Mitch Marner had himself a night managing two goals and five points, one shy of tying a Memorial Cup record.
“We work down low really well, I think Chuckie (Matthew Tkachuk) is really good at getting under people’s skin,” said Marner of his team’s ability to put the puck in the net. “We’ve worked really well all season long and we just keep clicking. It’s nice to have that.”
It was Tkachuk who drew a Rebels penalty which resulted in London’s first goal of the game. Tkachuk also fired off 10 shots but none managed to find the back of the net.
Christian Dvorak added two goals and four points.
Tyler Parsons stood tall making 32 saves for the win.
“I thought Red Deer came out real strong, had some good scoring chances,” said coach Dale Hunter. “Parsons was very good early and didn’t give them momentum by scoring. And then we scored a couple goals and got the momentum on our side.”
The Knights will take on the Brandon Wheat Kings in their second game of the tournament on Monday.
