Norfolk County OPP are urging parents to speak to their children about the dangers of online exploitation.
Police say they received a complaint on April 27th from a concerned parent after their 14-year-old teenager sent sexually explicit photos on-line to an unknown adult male.
Investigators have determined the two had met online, where the male demanded nude photos of the victim. The teen declined, at which time investigators say the male told the victim he would harm himself if the images were not sent. Fearing the male would harm himself, the photos were forwarded.
OPP have seen a marked increase in the number of reports of Self-Peer Exploitation — youth sending and requesting sexually explicit images or videos over the internet, also known as sexting.
Police say they are concerned for the safety of those involved as well as criminal ramifications, and want to create a greater awareness of the issue.
