Authorities say more than 100 dairy cows have died in a large-scale blaze at a farm in Essex County.
Fire crews say they responded to the dairy operation on Concession 11 near County Rd. 42 in Tecumseh shortly after 6 p.m. Monday. More than 50 firefighters responded to the scene to douse the flames which had spread to two barns and a silo.
Officials say there were 225 cows in the barn at the time of the fire and fewer than half survived. No people were injured in the blaze.
Investigators say it seems the blaze started when a straw shredding machine caught fire near a pile of hay. The case isn’t considered suspicious, but the Ontario Fire Marshal will likely be contacted.
A damage estimate hasn’t been released at this time.
