A former candidate for London City Council thinks the Forest City needs a name change.
Amir Farahi, who ran for Councillor in Ward 6 in 2014, thinks London needs to re-brand itself, noting there is a “London” in at least eight countries including Canada and England.
Farahi suggests a name change has worked for other cities, including Halifax.
“The Mayor actually underwent a complete rebranding strategy,” said Farahi. “They changed the slogan to ‘Be Bold,’ they changed the city’s name to Halifax. There were around 20,000 residents who were engaged in the process. Many, many of the residents were opposed to it.”
He also cited Kitchener as an example, as it used to be called ‘Berlin.’
Farahi has suggested “New London” as a possible name, but isn’t set on any one name. He admits there are 19 cities currently named New London in the world.
He will appear before the Corporate Services Committee on Tuesday where he will ask for a Communications Master Plan for the city so it can better sell itself to the world.
