London Police say a suspicious package found in a dumpster in the city’s south end contained commercial grade explosives.
Officers say it was around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday when they were called to the area behind Empire “Wellington 8” Theatres after a suspicious package was reported in the dumpster.
Police cordoned off Montgomery Road between Montgomery Gate and Harlech Gate as they investigated. Officers say they discovered the package contained commercial grade explosives.
Police wouldn’t comment on the exact nature of the explosives, but did say the package was secured by explosive technicians and disposed of at a separate location.
Officers issued an update on Wednesday afternoon saying the package was not a threat to public safety. Cst. Amy Phillipo told AM980 investigators determined there was no electronic device within the package to ignite the explosives.
That being said, Phillipo said officers are still interested in speaking with three to four males who were seen in the area where the package was found. They’re described as being between 17 and 24-years-old.
Anyone with information about the persons of interest, or the case in general, is asked to contact the London Police Service at 519-661-5680 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
