One of London’s most well-known businessmen has died.
Don Smith passed away Tuesday morning in London. The 89-year-old founded Canadian developing giant EllisDon with his brother in the early 1950s. The company went on to construct major projects across the country and around the world including Toronto’s SkyDome and the National Gallery in Ottawa.
Smith, pictured above at a past event in support of the London and St. Thomas Association of Realtors, was known as a generous man who worked to help others. He also served as the President of the Ontario Liberal Party for a time after being elected to the position in 1985.
The party tweeted Tuesday afternoon that the organization’s thoughts were with Smith’s family.
“Don was a giant in our party and beyond,” they wrote.
Smith is survived by his wife, their seven children and 21 grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements are unknown at this time.
